Find out what your chimney actually needs
A sweep clears the chimney and an inspection tells you what condition it is in, and the two are easy to mix up. Describe what the fireplace is doing and we will tell you which applies — including when the answer is neither yet.

Twelve services, and the difference between them matters
Chimney sweeping and chimney cleaning are two names for the same job, so they share one page. Inspection is different: it tells you what condition the chimney is in, and booking a sweep when you needed an inspection is the most common way people spend money without solving the problem.

Chimney Sweep & Cleaning
Chimney sweeping and cleaning: soot, creosote, ash and debris cleared from the flue, smoke chamber, smoke shelf, damper area and firebox.

Chimney Inspection
Assessment of the chimney's condition — liner, structure, venting and clearances — as a service in its own right.

Chimney Repair
Repair work across the chimney structure — masonry, crown, flashing, damper and deteriorated components.

Fireplace Repair
Repair of the fireplace as an appliance — firebox, refractory panels, doors, operation and draft faults.

Fireplace Cleaning
Cleaning of the firebox, grate, hearth, glass and surround rather than the flue above it.

Fireplace Installation
Installation of new fireplaces and replacement of existing units, including venting and clearance requirements.

Chimney Cap Installation
Installation and replacement of chimney caps, including spark arrestor screening where it is required.

Chimney Liner Repair
Repair and replacement of chimney liners, including relining of deteriorated or unlined flues.

Gas Fireplace Repair
Repair of gas fireplaces and inserts — ignition, pilot, burner, venting and glass seal faults.

Wood Stove Services
Servicing, cleaning and installation of wood stoves and inserts, where the appliance is real heat rather than atmosphere.

Dryer Vent Cleaning
Cleaning of dryer ducting from the appliance to the exterior termination, where lint accumulates out of reach.
We would rather tell you it can wait
A fireplace lit three times a year does not need an annual sweep. Open mortar joints between sound bricks need repointing, not a rebuild. A stain on the ceiling is almost never solved by sealing the brickwork.
Those are three common places money gets spent on the wrong thing. We would rather say so up front, because the alternative is a customer who paid for a service that could not fix their problem.
What we do ask for is the chance to establish what is actually wrong first. Inspection is listed as its own service here rather than bundled into a cleaning, because a camera survey takes time and equipment and should be described honestly.
Describe what it is doing
The symptom usually points more clearly than the service name does.

(213) 789-3721California is not one climate
A coastal chimney fails at the metal. A Central Valley chimney fails at the mortar. A Sacramento chimney, lit on more cold evenings, loads its flue faster than a San Diego one. Each region has its own page because the first question differs.
Southern California
From the coast to the inland valleys, the chimneys here were mostly built for a climate that never really tests them — and that is exactly why so many go unlooked-at for decades.
Inland Empire
Riverside and San Bernardino counties contain two almost unrelated chimney markets: a hot valley floor where fireplaces are decorative, and mountain communities where they are the heating system.
Bay Area
The Bay Area has some of California's oldest surviving residential chimneys and mandatory winter no-burn days. Those two facts together produce a very particular maintenance problem.
Central Valley
The Valley burns more wood than the coast and runs a daily, tiered winter burn program because of it. Both facts change what your chimney needs.
Sacramento Area
Sacramento burns more wood than most of urban California. Cold, still winter nights and a housing stock full of original masonry fireplaces are the reason.

How Often Does a California Chimney Actually Need Cleaning?
The honest answer is that the calendar does not decide it. Fuel type, burn hours and actual accumulation do — and in California those vary more by region than most advice admits.

Chimney Sweep or Chimney Inspection: Which One You Need
Sweeping and cleaning are two names for one job. Inspection answers a different question. Knowing which your problem points to prevents paying for a service that cannot solve it.

What Creosote Is, and Why the Third Stage Changes Everything
Creosote is not one substance. It hardens through three recognizable stages, and by the third a brush will not touch it. That distinction decides what any sweep can actually accomplish.
