Find your city
The city's residential stock is genuinely old by Californian standards. Craftsman bungalows, Spanish Colonial, Mid-Century ranch — the fireplaces in these houses were built when an annual sweep was simply assumed, and many have since been converted to gas, boxed in, or quietly abandoned. What they have mostly not had is anyone establishing what condition the flue is in. Add an earthquake that cracked liners across the city in 1994 and a property market where houses change hands often and nothing gets documented, and the result is a very large number of unknowns.
What is specific to Los Angeles
The city's pre-1960 housing — Craftsman, Spanish Colonial and post-war ranch — typically has a masonry firebox with a clay tile liner now sixty to a hundred years old.
The 1994 Northridge earthquake cracked flue liners across the city. Repairs frequently addressed the visible stack without the liner inside being assessed.

Hillside neighborhoods across the Santa Monica Mountains and the Hollywood Hills sit in very high fire hazard severity zones, where the spark arrestor required on every wood-burning chimney matters most.

Gas Conversions and What They Left Behind
A great many Los Angeles fireplaces were converted to gas logs at some point in the last thirty years, often around the time burn restrictions tightened. The conversion is usually treated as the end of the matter.
It is not. A gas log set produces very little creosote, which genuinely removes the fire-risk argument for sweeping. Everything else stays: the flue still carries combustion products, the damper is often clamped partly open and left that way, the cap still corrodes, and animals still find the opening. Gas systems fail without giving you smoke in the room as a warning, which is the whole argument for looking at them deliberately.
Hillside Property and Ember Risk
Large parts of the city sit in very high fire hazard severity zones — the Hollywood Hills, Bel Air, Pacific Palisades, the Verdugo slopes. On those parcels a chimney serving a wood-burning appliance needs proper spark arrestor screening rather than a decorative cap.
The distinction matters and is frequently missed. A cap keeps rain out. An arrestor is mesh with a specified maximum opening, and it is there to stop burning material leaving the flue. Plenty of hillside chimneys have the first and not the second.
