Find your city

San Bernardino lies on the valley floor directly beneath the San Bernardino Mountains, and that position defines it. The city itself is valley housing — post-war stock, severe summer heat, cold winter nights, and the thermal cycling that goes with that combination. But it sits immediately below communities where wood is genuine heat, and the foothill neighborhoods on the city's northern edge share their fire exposure. The 2003 Old Fire came down out of those mountains into the city itself.

What is specific to San Bernardino

  • Northern foothill neighborhoods sit in very high fire hazard severity zones at the base of the San Bernardino Mountains, with the 2003 Old Fire having burned into the city itself.

  • Valley-floor position below the mountain front produces severe summer heat and sharp winter overnight cooling, driving a wide annual cycle of expansion and contraction in exposed masonry.

  • Extensive post-war housing through the 1950s and 1960s installed masonry fireboxes with clay tile liners now at an age where cracking and joint separation are common.

  • The city falls under South Coast AQMD jurisdiction, while the desert portion of the county operates under Mojave Desert AQMD rules.

Foothill Properties and Ember Exposure

The northern edge of the city runs up against the mountain front, and those neighborhoods carry fire exposure that the rest of the valley floor does not. The Old Fire in 2003 demonstrated that fire coming down out of the San Bernardinos reaches the city, not just the communities above it.

For a chimney, the relevant point is screening. On a wood-burning flue in that terrain, mesh with a specified maximum opening is required rather than a plain cap — both to stop embers leaving your flue and, during a fire event, to reduce what can get in.

San Bernardino — common questions

In fire terms, yes. The foothill areas along the mountain front sit in very high fire hazard severity zones, and much of the flatter southern city does not carry the same designation. The spark arrestor itself is required on every wood-burning chimney in both.
