What Wood Stove Services Covers
A wood stove is a different proposition from a fireplace, and it is worth treating as its own service. A stove burning as genuine heat runs far more hours, at higher intensity, and vents through a considerably narrower flue than an open fireplace. Those three things together mean deposits accumulate faster and restrict the passage sooner. Stoves are also efficient in a way that creates its own issue: lower flue temperatures mean more condensation on the flue walls, which is exactly the condition creosote forms in. Servicing a stove properly means understanding it as a heating appliance rather than a decorative one.
This page covers stoves. If you have an open fireplace rather than a stove, chimney sweeping is the service. If you are considering an insert to replace an open fire, fireplace installation covers that decision.
What is included
- Clears the narrower flue that stoves vent through before it restricts
- Addresses the heavier deposit loads that genuine heating use produces
- Checks door and gasket seals, which govern how the stove burns
- Inspects baffles and firebrick inside the stove body
- Covers installation and clearance requirements for new or replacement stoves
How the work goes
Establish the appliance and the use
A stove run as primary heat through a real winter is a different job from one lit occasionally. Burn intensity determines scope more than anything else.
Inspect the flue and connector
The single-wall connector between stove and chimney is where deposits build fastest and where problems concentrate.
Clear the system
The narrower passage means the same deposit volume restricts a stove flue sooner than a fireplace flue. Clearing it fully matters more here.
Check the stove body
Baffles, firebrick, door gaskets and glass. Gasket condition in particular governs how the stove controls its own burn.
Talk about fuel
Most stove performance complaints come back to wood moisture content. It is worth covering, and it costs nothing to fix.
Why Efficiency Produces More Creosote
This is counterintuitive and it is the most useful thing to understand about stove flues. A modern efficient stove extracts more heat from the fuel and sends less of it up the flue. That is the point of the appliance and it is why they heat so well.
The consequence is a cooler flue. Creosote forms when volatile combustion products condense on flue walls, and they condense more readily on cool walls than hot ones. So an efficient stove, burned carefully, can lay down deposits faster than a wasteful open fire. Running the stove hot enough for long enough, particularly at the start of a burn, is the practical counter.
Wood Moisture Is the Thing Most Worth Fixing
More stove complaints trace back to fuel than to the appliance. Wood that has not been properly seasoned contains a great deal of water, and burning it means a large part of the fire's energy goes into evaporating that water rather than heating the room.
The visible consequences are a fire that will not get going, glass that blackens within an hour, poor heat output, and heavy creosote. None of that is an appliance fault and no amount of servicing fixes it. Properly seasoned wood is the single cheapest improvement available to most stove owners, and it is worth ruling out before spending money on the stove.
Door Gaskets Do More Than Seal
The door gasket on a wood stove is not just about keeping smoke in. A modern stove controls its burn by controlling the air reaching the fire, and that only works if the air comes in where the appliance intends it to.
A degraded gasket lets air in around the door, which means the stove can no longer throttle back. It burns faster than the control setting suggests, consumes more fuel, and becomes harder to run at a steady output. Gaskets are inexpensive and are a routine service item, and replacing a worn one often solves problems that get attributed to the stove itself.
