The combination is what makes Fresno distinctive. Summer temperatures well above 100°F expand exposed brickwork; winter nights near freezing contract it; the joints take the movement and eventually open. Then tule fog settles across the valley through December and January, keeping the whole stack saturated for weeks rather than hours, and water finds every joint that has opened. The city's older neighborhoods carry genuine pre-war masonry, and wood burning remains more common here than on the coast.

What is specific to Fresno

  • In a typical year Fresno's hottest day reaches about 109°F and its coldest night drops below freezing (NOAA 1991–2020 climate normals), and that annual swing opens mortar joints in exposed masonry faster than in coastal California.

  • SJVAPCD runs Check Before You Burn from November 1 to the end of February, declaring daily whether burning is permitted, restricted to registered devices, or prohibited.

  • Older neighborhoods including the Tower District and Huntington Boulevard carry 1910s to 1930s housing with original masonry fireplaces predating most Valley development.

  • Wood burning as supplementary heat remains substantially more common here than in coastal California, producing heavier flue deposits despite the burn program.

Heat, Then Fog

Take these as one mechanism rather than two problems. The summer heat and winter cold work the mortar joints loose over years. The fog then delivers sustained moisture to those open joints for weeks each winter.

The visible result is usually efflorescence — white crystalline staining on the outside of the chimney where water moving through the masonry has carried salts to the surface. It is not damaging in itself. It is a signal that water is getting in, and it arrives well before the stage where brick faces start breaking away.

Tower District Masonry

The Tower District and the Huntington Boulevard area contain housing from the 1910s through the 1930s, older than most of the Valley, with original masonry fireplaces built as features of the house.

A century of the Fresno thermal cycle is a hard life for brickwork, and these chimneys have generally had a rougher time than their equivalents in milder climates. Worth assessing on condition rather than assuming anything from appearance.

Fresno — common questions

Efflorescence. Water moving through the masonry carries mineral salts to the surface, where they crystallize as it evaporates. It is not damaging by itself, but it tells you water is entering the brickwork, usually through joints opened by thermal movement. Addressing the water path now is much cheaper than dealing with spalled brick later.
