Few California counties span this much elevation. At the western end, Roseville, Rocklin and Lincoln are valley-floor suburban development with the tule fog and thermal cycling that implies. Climbing east through Auburn and the Gold Country foothills, winters get genuinely cold. In the Lake Tahoe Basin, around Tahoe City on the north shore, wood is real heat, freeze-thaw works on masonry every winter, and a substantial share of properties are second homes whose owners are not there to notice a problem developing.
What matters about Placer chimneys
The county spans from near the valley floor to the Sierra crest, so freeze-thaw masonry damage is routine in its eastern communities and effectively absent in its western ones.
Tahoe-basin and foothill property in the county includes substantial second-home and short-term-rental stock, where absentee ownership means flue problems go unobserved between visits.
Placer County operates its own Air Pollution Control District rather than falling under the Sacramento Metropolitan district that governs the county immediately to its south.

Extensive foothill and mountain terrain sits in State Responsibility Area fire terrain, where the spark arrestor the state building code requires on every wood-burning chimney matters most, and Public Resources Code section 4291 requires trees within 10 feet of a chimney outlet to be cut back.

Rapid western-county growth from the 1990s onward installed extensive factory-built fireplaces, while foothill and mountain communities carry much older and frequently owner-modified installations.
Valley, Foothills and Lake Tahoe
In Roseville, Rocklin and Lincoln, most fireplaces are factory-built units from the last thirty years, and the questions are the ones that come with appliances: chase covers, refractory panels and parts for a specific model. Fireplace repair covers those.
Auburn and the foothills carry older masonry and colder winters. Tahoe City is a different place again: an unincorporated community on Lake Tahoe's north shore at roughly 6,200 feet, where a stove or fireplace is often the main heat, snow and freeze-thaw work on the chimney every winter, and many cabins sit empty for weeks. Wood stove servicing is usually the right service there.
Lake Tahoe Has Its Own Wood Heater Rule
Tahoe City is inside the Lake Tahoe Basin, which the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency regulates alongside the county. TRPA has run a wood heater retrofit program since 1993: when a property in the basin is sold or transferred, the seller files a statement with TRPA that either there are no wood heaters on the property or that all of them meet TRPA emission standards.
If you are selling or buying a Tahoe City cabin, find out early what the stove or fireplace insert is and whether it meets the standard, because an old uncertified unit becomes part of the transaction. Legally existing open fireplaces are outside the program. TRPA's wood stove page explains it and lists any current replacement rebates.
