Alameda County's older neighborhoods — central Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda itself — carry Victorian and Edwardian housing with brick chimneys built before flue liners were standard practice. The flue is the brickwork. A century of use has eroded the internal joints where nobody can see. Further south and east the picture shifts to post-war tract housing with conventional clay tile liners. The county also has a serious hillside fire history, which changes the requirements on any wood-burning appliance up there.

What matters about Alameda chimneys

  • Victorian and Edwardian housing in Oakland, Berkeley and Alameda commonly has unlined or minimally lined brick flues, built before liners became standard practice.

  • The Oakland and Berkeley hills sit in very high fire hazard severity zones following the 1991 Tunnel Fire, which makes the spark arrestor required on every wood-burning chimney especially important there.

  • Persistent marine damp keeps masonry wet for extended periods through winter, turning small flashing and crown failures into interior water damage within a single season.

  • Alameda County sits under the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. Its Spare the Air alerts are mandatory no-burn days in winter, and its Regulation 6, Rule 3 has prohibited wood-burning devices in newly built homes since November 1, 2016.

  • The Hayward Fault runs directly through the county's urban corridor, and unreinforced masonry chimneys on older housing stock are among the most seismically vulnerable residential elements.

Alameda County — common questions

It means the brickwork itself is the flue, with no separate liner inside it. This was normal practice before roughly 1920 and is common in older Oakland, Berkeley and Alameda housing. It is not automatically unsafe, but a century of use erodes the internal mortar joints where you cannot see them, so establishing the condition with a camera is the sensible step before anything else.
